Knife Sharpening Class

During this exclusive hands-on 4-hour session, learn how to sharpen and finish your own forged STEELPORT kitchen knife from Bladesmith/Co-founder Eytan Zias. Receive hands-on training on how to properly sharpen a blade using whetstones, techniques for caring for and honing your blade at home, and have the rare chance to use your new skills on an unfinished STEELPORT 8″ Chef Knife of your choice and make it your own. You’ll leave the class with both new knowledge and a premium American forged chef knife that you custom finished yourself.

  • 4 hours of hands-on sharpening training
  • A STEELPORT 8″ Chef Knife (that each student has custom finished during class) and sheath ($465 retail value)
  • Local artisan food and drink during the event, hosted in the STEELPORT production space

***Hand sharpening is not easy – it is a physical activity and requires a certain amount of dexterity, ability to follow instructions, and an interest in the craft – please keep that in mind when considering signing up.

The STEELPORT 8″ Chef Knife was recently named the “Best Made-in-USA Chef Knife” by Gear Patrol, the “Most Versatile Blade in Your Kitchen” by Robb Report, and “a work of art” by Forbes.

Carbon steel cutlery is for those who want the sharpest possible knife and see it as a point of pride to own and maintain a high performance tool. STEELPORT is reintroducing heirloom American forged carbon steel cutlery, handmade in Portland, Oregon. We deliver trusted performance, exceptional design and handcrafted individuality through rigorous attention to detail.

STEELPORT’s first and flagship product is an 8″ carbon steel Chef Knife — Solid one-piece drop-forged construction of American 52100 steel achieving an unmatched 65HRC hardness at the blade for exceptional long-lasting sharpness while maintaining a softer 30HRC spine for lifelong durability, a smooth hand-polished spine and bolster for a supremely comfortable pinch grip hold, and a resin-stabilized contoured handle made of beautiful local Oregon Maple burl.

Eytan Zias finishing STEELPORT Knife

Eytan opened his first knife retail shop, Knife House, in 2007 followed by a second one in Portland. It is now the go-to place for the culinary community and home cooks alike to purchase and learn about knives. His two shops contain one of the largest collections of kitchen knives of any independently owned store in the country. Eytan simultaneously pursued a passion for knife making, studying and experimenting with steel properties, blade geometry and traditional forging techniques. Eytan and the STEELPORT team are using traditional techniques with modern innovations to create the knife he always wanted to be broadly available.
