Chef Carlo Lamagna is an award-winning chef whose work is deeply rooted in Filipino culture and Midwestern sensibility. After early kitchen training in Detroit, studying at the Culinary Institute of America, and cooking in Chicago and Europe, he relocated to Portland in 2014 and opened his acclaimed Filipino restaurant, Magna Kusina, in 2019. His accolades include being named one of Food & Wine’s Best New Chefs of 2021 and a 2022 James Beard Award finalist for Best Chef: Pacific Northwest. Lamagna’s approach to cooking is shaped by his upbringing between Detroit and the Philippines, where his parents instilled a strong sense of family, culture, and respect for ingredients. Those influences continue to guide his work at Magna Kusina and Magna Kainan in Denver.
